Mp Doran: Stronger Policies Start with Stronger Public Input

Tap to zoom
Member of Parliament Egbert J. Doran is exploring the establishment of a Citizens’ Advisory Council for the island. This consideration follows discussions at the recent Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) in the Netherlands. The concept was presented by representatives of the Dutch Burgerberaad, a Citizens’ Assembly model that enables ordinary citizens to research issues and provide recommendations to policymakers. While the presentation focused on climate, MP Doran expressed interest in the advisory model itself, envisioning its broader application to various issues affecting Sint Maarten. He believes this mechanism could enhance legislators' understanding of citizens' daily lives, thereby strengthening their legislative functions.
