Mp Lacroes submits Amendment to Strengthen Accountability for Leaving the Scene of Serious Traffic Accidents

Member of Parliament Francisco A. Lacroes has submitted an amendment to Article 9 of the Road Traffic Ordinance, aiming to enhance accountability for drivers involved in serious traffic accidents who leave the scene. The proposed change seeks to close a legal loophole where drivers involved in accidents resulting in death or serious bodily injury can utilize an existing 24-hour reporting exception. Currently, drivers may avoid prosecution for leaving the scene if they report to law enforcement within 24 hours. While recognizing its potential utility for minor incidents, MP Lacroes argues this provision creates an unacceptable gap when applied to severe or fatal accidents, hindering immediate investigation and accountability.
