Simpson Bay community activist Briana Halley thanked residents who gathered on May 25, 2026, after a sea grape tree at Simpson Bay Beach was damaged during excavation works. Halley said the tree represents cultural, ancestral, and environmental heritage, not just a plant. Residents have protested the works for weeks, citing risks to the beach, nearby properties, and public safety. Police and government officials visited the site, and the Minister of VROMI reportedly indicated a stop order would be issued. The community is awaiting permit documentation and hopes the tree can be replanted and saved.
